blacksmith .270 WIN Oct 22, 2014 #1 Both Ames/True Temper and Gerber are .gov suppliers. So what is the difference between these pint-sized diggers? At a glance, very little. The dimensions are identical and they both weigh in at 2 lbs, 5 ounces. Each of them is compatible with a common PALS pouch. The Gerber gets a lot of grief for its polymer handle. It is much more comfortable than the stamped aluminum handle of the Ames. Due to the Gerbers X-shaped cross section it appears to be stronger. The blade on the Ames shovel is secured with heavy duty rivets. It also has a think zinc-galvanized plating. The Gerber blade is spot welded and at best has a phosphate coating. So which one should you get? Both. Either one will serve you well. They are strikingly similar, with minor differences in blade and handle.
