Cemetery in a ghost town . . .

I don't travel much in holiday traffic, but I'm going to take a ride over to a nearby Veterans Cemetery today. I'll spend some time reading some markers there.

Maybe the most famous name in the yard.

Private First Class Bell died before the war ended, 4 days before I was born.

I went to Fort Hill with the specific goal of finding if there were any Veterans of three wars like Cadd's father.
Here is the burial place of Master Sergeant William Goins.
Served in the US Navy and the US Army.

I bet when Goins and Quinn get at the same poker Up There they have some great stories to share.

I didn't know that many of these guys were GI's until they put the flags out.
For many, no service information is given. The VFW marks those with a blue star, painted.

Ray Hazelton survived the day of infamy.

There were many paupers buried in the cemetery with just a tiny marker-- some even less than this.

This was the stone of a wealthy or well loved man. It's 3'x6' of thick black granite. Mr. Foster served with the 48th Missouri volunteers:

Well-to-do heirs, or just Model A lovers? I probably saw them with the local Horseless Carriage club Parading through Clovis.

Some of the stones have cryptic inscriptions:

This famous local couple ran Daddinos Egg Ranch for at least 50 years.

This fellow was a blacksmith and a rope slingin' cowboy:

Cool and interesting, thanks for posting this.

Many of these are in a section of the cemetery concealed by weeds and bushes and I had never seen them before.

The city of Clovis was named after Clovis Cole but he does not appear to be buried here.

You can see the Damage Done by ground squirrels. I used to shoot them off my dad's back porch with his .22lr.

The end.

That was a lot of photographs I posted 113, if I have counted correctly.

I didn't have much time to do the editing on the last batch. They really deserved better treatment.

I sat with my mom this morning and looked through these pictures with her. I found that a few of her friends are buried there in Academy Cemetary.

Cadd, I've been thru those pix several times. Interesting. There are many implied stories; like George and Theresa Kennett, sharing year of birth and year of death.

*** Cadd points out that I misread the stones. I see that Theresa's dates were on both stones. ***

I must have overloaded the server. I think about 25 photos I posted this AM have disappeared.

WHOOPS! Not so. They are all there.

The system makes you click "more" to load them all.

Its amazing to see who from the Ballys married whom from the Thompsons, and Simpsons, Beards, Bairds, etc.

There are more stones I didnt post. Many "unknowns", and many small children.

The Academy Monument:

I was premature in labeling academy a Ghost Town. According to the sign, 52 people still live there. . . .
But that sign has said 52 since at least 1975 when I moved here.
