Rifle barrel swap

Oddcaliber

.270 WIN
Hay guys, though I'd ask a quick question. Of all the Mossberg rifles out there which one would be the easiest one to change a barrel on? I have one really good rifle caliber, 8mm mauser. And I don't want to hack up any of my 98's. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why would you want to use a rifle other than the Mauser? (my 1939 K98 sporter shown) ;) I would look into a caliber that can be re-chambered to 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser). I don't know off the top of my head which that is. You'll also have to worry about the extractor/ejector/headspace etc.

BTW, Welcome Aboard! :)

Thanks for the welcome, I collect and shoot milsurp rifles. Have 2 98's, one has a 1917 date stamp! Other one is a Brno built Rominain contract VZ 24. I want something a bit more modern that's easy to scope. Hence the question.

A little gun porn for you... ;) This came from my namesame uncle who sporterized it in the late 50s. Died in a car crash around 1960. :( A couple pics show the scope that WAS on it, a 4x20 "Universal" brand out of Hialeah, FL. Has a "spoon" bolt handle welded on and aftermarket safety lever for scope clearance, same 50s vintage. Matching numbers other than the bolt which was probably bought separate with bolt handle and installed. The Burris is a $20 (after rebate) 6-18x50 "cheapy" bought last year or year before BF.

The 4x20 went onto a US Enfield 1917 30.06 sporter with ancient Weaver side mount. I had to remove the 3/4" 4x BB-gun scope mount it had and put a 1" to mount the 4x20 which barely fit. I can post pics of that if you want. Or more of the K98...

Very nice build, you could still see the German markings on it. Anyway I might be able to find a Remington 700 classic in 8mm,after I win the lottery! LOL

My uncle "built" it and I was not yet born when he died and my other uncle, who gave me the gun, didn't know anything about the mods. I did go through it earlier this year and replace a standard roll pin (1/8"?) for the trigger housing that was loose with metric NOS pin (3mm?) which tightened up the action. I also smoothed the trigger/sear which I think is a two-stage and probably aftermarket. It was not uncommon for GIs back then to buy war-surplus arms and "sporterize" them.

The bore in my K98 isn't bad but a little bit pitted, probably from the surplus corrosive Berdan-primed ammo of the day. I had about 80rds of surplus I went through to "dispose" of it so I could pull the bullets. Load round, pull trigger, "click", wait 10 seconds, eject dud, repeat. Of all the rounds I think 3 fired, 1 took about 3sec before it went off. Pulled the bullets from all the rest which was a chore in itself... The K98 DOES fire well with modern day ammo and I probably have about 40rds through it with acceptable accuracy.

The M1917 has a beautiful bore, I think chrome-lined. That gun was not a parade-duty gun, or the bore would be trashed. These are the only pics I have handy at the moment... You can see I was in the middle of putting the 4x20 on it. It has a "bent" bolt for clearance and hand-checkered Monte Carlo stock. Rear sight was milled off of it and front sight is non-existent so collector value is slim but it shoots well. :) Also has a Herter's? compensator. All mods done in the 50s, as well. THIS gun has engraving and actually has MY (and my uncle's) initials engraved into the mag floor plate. :D

PS: I had to use "high" mounts on the K98 to get the Burris to fit and also had to turn the front scope mount to the rear. I had a 3-9x40 I was going to use but it wasn't "long" enough to fit between the mounts...

You got me thinking about the M1917 so I pulled it out of the safe to take a couple pics. :D Over the decades it and the K98 were stored improperly (not by me) and developed some surface rust. I know the scope looks hokey set back as it is but the eye relief is perfect and this was the best the side-mounts would allow...
