Are all 590s drilled tapped?

I may be wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but I thought the 500 and 590 were the same receiver. Just upgraded metal trigger assembly and slightly thicker walled barrel on the 590.

Almost. The 590 has a Heavy Walled Barrel with a polymer trigger group. The 590A1 has the metal trigger group.

Mossberg started tapping receivers in the 1970s. These are rare, and use a smaller tap than today. Not all 590s are tapped and the early ones only had three (3) holes for the ghost ring sight. By 'about' 1997 everything was standardized to the four taps that we have today. Except the 88s.
