Root ax?

I've never heard it called that.

I've always called those mattocks.
 
They use those things around here a lot for trenching out PVC sprinkler systems, and small roots are what they're chopping with it.

What I think of as a mattock has a pick on one end, and an adze on the other.

The root axe has a hatchet opposite the adze.

(EDIT... I googled this and I see they officially call this the "cutter mattock.")
