Heres what I use. (I have an obbsession for gloves the same way I do packs and jackets!)

I get these from Cabela's. Unlined Elkskin Leather. They fit and feel great! The leather is buttery soft and the keystone cut thumb makes for a form fitting glove with plenty of manual dexterity. I use these most commonly for shooting, definitely not for work!!!

This is the closest pic I can find to my deerskin gloves I get from Weiler Welding. Theyre unlined, and like the elk skin, buttery soft. I think theyre also a little heavier than the elkskin. Again the keystone cut thumb, very good fit and finish, very durable but not for work. I have used these only for dog training on and off the bird field.

Finally, just picked these up. Mechanix Original. Honestly, not heavy enough for workin in, not even on cars, I dont care what they say! I cant weld in them cuz theyll melt. However, I'm gonna try them for shooting to put less wear on my elkskin gloves through bein wet and muddy. They should hold up well for that! ;) Also, I got them a size bigger than I normally would because the thumb is not keystone cut! Therefore, less room for movement between the thumb and hand part of the glove. It stresses the stitching between the two. So like I said, a size larger and it feeels ok.

I'm a big fan of the Mechanix Fast Fit gloves for work and "tactical" use. Northern Tool is the cheapest place I've found to get them.

I'm also a big fan of glove liners for the winter. My favorites are the Manzella Max-50's but they're getting hard to find. Seirus makes a similar liner but I haven't tied them yet.

I may save up my pennies and try a pair of Filson's Original Goatskin Gloves.

Filson also makes a mesh shooting glove that looks pretty interesting.

I have a couple pairs of Marker lined gloves I received when I was a volunteer for the 2002 Olympics, Very nice and have held up well for the last 9 years, They came with some sort of liner to help in the Winter, I wish I could find a pic.
But I do agree, Nice gloves are quite handy ;)

Thanks for the link. For the time being, my local Sports Authority still carries them for $9.99/pair. I'm hoping they continue to do so. I picked up a couple extra pairs just in case ....

On another topic ... the Keystone Thumb. Admittedly, I'm not enough of a glove geek to know what the term meant prior to this discussion. So, I looked it up. For anyone else not in the know ... a keystone thumb provides added reinforcement and padding at the point on the glove that receives the most wear. It is a double thickness of leather that overlaps onto the base of the thumb. An extra row of stitching further reinforces the area and prevents seam rips.

Keystone Thumb Example

In my wish list of gloves from Filson, it appears that the Original Goatskin Gloves do not have a Keystone Thumb, but the Mesh Shooting Gloves do.

I've never seen Manzella before now, Thanks for posting that up!!! They've got some nice lookin gloves at reasonable prices!

Over the years I have gone through about a hundred pair of leather gloves. Primarily at work where the life expectancy of gloves is less than a month. Gloves without the keystone cut thumb will typically shred at that seam in a couple weeks because every time you open your hand the stitching is being stressed. Not that the keystone thumb isnt stressed, but it allows for a better range of motion and being able to fully open your hand, and in most cases for me, being able to fully and firmly grasp tools. Otherwise, I cant seat the tool completely into the web of my hand.

The shape of an individuals hand could make a difference too. It may not be as big a deal for some folks, but for me, my thumb and pointer finger are always longer than the "inseam" if you will.
