how to tell wood type.

so i ordered a stock and forend for my mossberg 500 is there a way to tell if its birch or any other type of wood? it looks darker than the newer stocks. I am curious because i would like to refinish it.

You might be able to get close here: http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/ . It's obviously been stained sometime in the past (appears to be a walnut or other medium dark stain), so you could probably get a better idea from either the end grain under the butt pad or sanding off some of the stain enough to see the original color and grain.
