Hmmm ... heat shield, huh?

I ordered the barrel last night. Midway had them on sale for $74.99.

You need to 100% order a heat shield for that bad boy.

Any ideas on where I can find one that's blued and reasonably resembles the ones on the original Winny Trench Guns? Mossberg lists them on their site, but they're out of stock.

Guess I'm going to have to re-title this thread to Project Trench Gun 500. :D

Re: Project 500

I took a 500C (20ga)-Added ATI pistol buttstock and the ATI grooved forend.
Rail mounted LPA ghost ring + front sites (2 bbl's 18 and 26")
and a single rail on mag tube for combo laser/light and Limbsaver buttpad.
A little to much in expense, but I have a gun for all purposes.
Short bbl has a polychoke, long bbl has a C-lect choke.
Sight rail will allow for a scope if I want it.
$175 is a very good price as he older guns have double action bars
that are not part of the furniture. BTW- I sold the wood furniture
on ebay for $80+ shipping to offset some of the costs!

Ok thats awesome. I think we all should have "Trench Guns" now.

Re: Project 500

I'm going to skip the bayonet but I think one of your shell cuffs will make a nice addition. I'm still thinking about a sling.

The hardest part seems to be finding a heat shield. NO ONE has those in stock.

Re: Project 500

I know they can be hard to come by, but the AIMPRO is my favorite of the aftermarket heat shields.

I need to get a couple pics for you of the leather yet!

I agree with Dan! Though I dont have one, (yet) wood furniture and the short barrel! Real good look!!!

Sounds a lot like mine...LOL

I did however darken the furniture (Walnut stain) on mine since Mossberg factory wood is just a bit to blonde.

Re: Project 500

The factory wood is pretty light. I kinda like it though! ;)

Re: Project 500

Barrel came today. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. Wife has the good camera.

Re: Project 500

That is sweet! Looks great so far  .

Re: Project 500

Is that the same stock and forend? Do you like the finish? I refinished the stock and forend on my .22/20 ga over and under. Just did a hand rub stain / sealer and no clear coat of any kind and it really turned out nicer than I thought....just an idea to set it apart from the crowd

Re: Project 500

I kind of like the color of it as is. Ordered a poly heat shield until I can find a blued metal one.

Re: Project 500

I like it too, I guess I mean the finish. just good low cost option with a touch of custom.

might want to fly some want to buy threads at all the shotgun forums for the heat shield, I read about people removing them so they can install other forends

Re: Project 500

Here are some better pics with the short barrel. Now, I'm just waiting for my heat shield and a ST Leathercraft cuff and sling.

Re: Project 500

That wood is really in great shape. Nice find.

Re: Project 500

The polymer heat shield showed up today. I'm sure it's functional - in that it would keep you from burning your hand on a hot barrel - but I don't like the matte finish of it.

Re: Project 500

Your right, since you are attempting a classic look. I like matte on a modern motif.

Re: Project 500

It looks good but I agree a nice blued heat shield would have been sweet.
