Greetings from New zealand.
I added a patriot 7mm prc to the gun cupboard . Its gonna be my new deer rifle . For those that dont now , New zealand has a full range of hunting opportunities which are all free range . THere is even whitetail here . Along with Red deer , elk, sambar , sika , Rusa , goats , thar , chamois and hogs .
I have been looking for a forum that focuses on Mossberg because thats what i mostly have in the gun cabinet , and now with the added patriot 7mm prc i am wanting to build a long range outfit out of it so i have come here looking for ideas .
The PRC goes along side my two Patriot 7mm-08 ,s
First thing i am after is all the options for a chassis for the PRC . So , if you have an opinion on that , let me know.
cheers

Welcome from the socialist republic of New York! Please post pics of the wonderful beauty of New Zealand’s landscape while your out on the hunt.

Welcome to MO from BC, Canada.

Nice set up. Love that you guys are still allowed...even encouraged to use suppressors. Sorry about your gun bans though. We know only too well all about 'em here.

I seem to remember Hawkes Bay is on the North Island near Napier?

A few years ago I spend quite a bit of time in New Zealand. Really enjoyed the interchange with the local people especially out in the counrty and in the small towns. However, like many here in America they we not thrilled with the government.

Regards

Probably some extra info would be good in this discussion . NZ has never had any law that allowed anyone, to defend their property and family with firearms , unlike the USA . Our rights are more embedded in the "Magna Carter" which guaranteed certain rights to "all free men " . Meaning " effectively " if one man had a rifle , then all men could have the same rights . However , not everyone can afford all the same things as their fellow man . Anyway , in NZ firearms were only ever known for the use of hunting ( another right ) somewhere around the end of the first worlds war when there were thousands of ex military bolt action ( mostly .303 ) rifles were sold by the State to ordinary kiwis who promptly used them to shot every deer they came across to feed their familiies .
Then came the semi auto,s ....... somewhere after the vietnam war , the semi autos started turning up , and then some 50 yrs later an austrailian nut case turned up in our country and used one to murder all those people .
Now , as it turns out , the Government said "thats it , hand all the semis over " , keep your bolt actions ( just as it used to be ) and by the way we are going back to having firearms registered ( just as it used to be ) . Most real NZ hunters really aren,t bothered at all . Particularly , those guys like me , who only ever used bolt actions , remember how we got em , and what M16 and a SLR,s are ( cause we used them, a very long time ago ) and what they were actaully made for and it wasn,t for hunting your dinner .
cheers

Many Canadian gun owners took that general attitude toward gun control initiatives over the years.

It took successive waves of politicians over decades lying continuously to the public about what their ultimate end of gun control would be...we found out.

They won't be satisfied until all or most guns are banned. They even want our Lee Enfields (holds too many rounds). They want any action/function over 10,000 joules of muzzle energy. That includes single shot break actions, bolts...stunningly ridiculous. Of course, those types of rifles can be some of the most expensive firearms you can buy...and are 100% purpose built for hunting and nothing else. There are people with $10,000+ safari rifles that will have to try and ship them out of country or lose them to confiscation at some point.

We are simply waiting for the hammer to fall now. These firearms are all locked up in people's homes and cannot be used. They're supposed to initiate a "buyback"...(don't get me started).

The feds are angling to do away with all or most semi's and restrict mag tube capacity on pumps and levers. Can you imagine the horror of butchering a 150 year old lever action rifle just to satisfy the government's arbitrary 5 round capacity rule?

There comes a time when being "reasonable" means rolling over for people who are way more concerned with a pushing a disingenuous disarmament agenda than they ever cared about safety.

I hope it doesn't go that way for NZ'ers but if Trudeau and his ilk have their way it certainly will for us. Ardern and Trudeau were quite happy to congratulate each other on their gun control campaigns. Trudeau was practically frothing at the mouth when Ardern announced the sweeping bans a few years back. Trudeau even wants to ban air rifles and air soft for heavens sake. These people have a not so secret anymore total disarmament agenda and they constantly lie about it! And it's time we stood together and told them where to shove their gun bans!

No offense to you but just about any firearm is suitable for putting food on the table in my opinion. I don't subscribe to the notion that "If you need more than X number of rounds you shouldn't hunt anyway..." We get that crap hurled at us constantly from gun grabbers and from our within own community of hunters...people who just can't see the forest for the trees. It pisses me off that some hunters still refuse to stand up for ALL gun owners rights to own firearms for whatever lawful purpose they choose.

Why does anyone need anything that goes beyond bare necessities??? Why does anyone need alcohol? It's killed more people than just about anything else in the history of mankind.

Why does anyone need a white van or truck? They're notorious for being used in mass killings.

I think most sensible people would agree that restricting access to firearms based on criminal history or on long, verifiable histories of mental illness is a far better way to go than banning the firearms themselves and preventing lawful, responsible ownership.

Sorry for the long post.

WELCOME KIWI !
I’ve only met a few people from your islands, here in the sunny San Joaquin Valley of central California, but very pleasant folk.

I’d like to sail around NZ on a sailboat, but I’m not keen on climbing into large aircraft to get there anymore. I’d have to come by water, which takes a long time.

THanks for you input . AS it turns out the NZ system seems to be very simaler to the canadian system , But also different . I think our system as it turns out is better though . I have bought and sold rifles in the system without an issue , Had my firearms licence renewed without issue , assisted two others to get licences as well, also without issue . Heres something most people dont know , the law has allowed nzers with firearms 5 yrs to "register " them as well . THere doesm,t seem to be any activity to de-arm those that have firearms legally .
