Weird Part of the Week

Mossbergs are notorious rattle traps and the factory has made efforts over the years to reduce this. The G-series guns of the 1970s used a unique coil spring and collar on the magazine tube. In the 1990s dimples and a leaf spring were added to the forend tube. This is an excellent set-up and is still used today.

But there is another one, used in the 1980s. A polymer split ring was added to the forend nut. This did a good job of reducing rattle. When combined with a modern leaf-sprung forend tube these are by far the smoothest, quietest forend tubes you'll ever use. If you look at your Mossberg today you will likely see the machined groove in your forend nut. The polymer ring was discontinued but the groove is still there.

Strange, I just checked my 1988 500A and it has no split ring nor a grove for one.

Good ole Mossberg unpredictable.
