930 SPX outing, issues, scrapes

OK finally got a chance to take my 930 SPX out for its first outing. Ran about 165 rounds of the following:

50 rounds high brass #6 shot Federal (2 3/4")
25 rounds Winchester #7.5 High Brass (2 3/4")
25 rounds Federal #4 High Brass steel shot (3")
25 rounds Winchester #8 low recoil (2 3/4")
20 rounds slugs (weird name forgot it) low recoil (2 3/4")
10 rounds Remmington Slugs (2 3/4")
10 rounds Federal 00 Buck low recoil (2 3/4")

I seem to have feeding issues on the 3rd or 4th round using the #6 shot. Seems the spring either got jammed up in the magazine (i.e. no push on the next round) or it pushed 2 rounds in and it got a log jam.

Weird. That happened 3 times during the # 6 shot.

I moved on to the 3" #4 steel shot and zero jams but that kicked like a mule!

Also had one Jam on the low recoil #8 shot (2 shot loads which log jammed in the magazine loading port) when I mixed up the rounds between #7.5, #8, and #4. However, when I was using the low recoil #8 by itself it seems to cycle just fine.

No jams with the 00 Buck or any of the slugs.

I took the shotgun apart when I came home and cleaned big time and oiled it in the recommended areas. Hopefully that does the trick and it figures itself out.

Here's the big issue. I placed the Nordic Component Magazine Clamp on the shotgun. Thought I tightened it down pretty good but when I was knocking out the 3" loads the clamp began to move and scrapped up the side of the barrel and magazine. Makes Papa Midnight look ugly

I put some protectant on it after I cleaned it to deter any rust. Any idea on what I can do to fix this? See pics below:

Welcome, Looks like a great outing!
Maybe bend the clamp into a tighter circle or something, I have no idea why it would move around so much, Did it come with any shims? Maybe a thin piece of rubber.

thanks for the write up.

I purchased the Nordic Clamp with the pic. rail . I did tighten the clamp bolts pretty good, while paying attention not to distort the mag ext or barrel. I alternated back and forth with half a turn on each bolt until they were pretty snug. I chose not to put anything on the clamp that could burn onto the barrel due to heat. After 200 roungs, to date, it has not moved.

Did you order the Mossberg 930 Nordic Clamp? It was an option I had to choose, when I ordered mine through Cactus Tactical.

Hope this helps........regards 8sm

Yeah i ordered the 930 clamp and it said 930. I'm thinking I didn't crank it down tight enough. The 3" steel high brass was kicking real hard so I'm guessing that's what caused the clamp to move.

Went to a local gun shop near my job and showed the gunsmith the picture. He said he could blue it but it wouldn't match the finish. All I needed to do was to keep it oiled after each use so it wouldn't rust. still kinda bummed about it but it doesn't effect the performance of the shotgun.

Looking to go out again in a couple of weeks. Found a good deal on some cheap ammo $27 for 100 rounds of winchester #8 steel shot.

I think, but I maybe wrong, Nordic has two different magazine clamps for the 930 SPX? The heavy walled barrel are being supplied with the newest model, the one with the large knelled bolt handle. Just a thought.

Yes I specified the "modify for mossberg" when I ordered it. I really think I didn't tighten it enough and the kick from the 3" steel shot high brass ended up moving the clamp down the barrel. I'm going to chalk it up to user error.... for now.

I'm probably hitting the range again tomorrow to sight in my ghost sights with some slugs, pattern the weapon and see if I get any more feed jams. I cleaned this monster and oiled it. I even got into the magazine tube as I feel the jams were because the spring was getting jammed inside the mag tube. Hell even the follower got snagged inside and I had to safety the weapon and unjam the follower. I'm hoping this does the trick I'll keep you guys informed.

disassembled again today and inspected to make sure the firearm was smooth where it should be smooth and the magazine spring is not kinked. I began to cycle a few rounds manually through the ejection port and it seems this particular shotgun just hates Winchester Super X 7 1/2 high brass rounds. I had several FTE which caused a jam. I think it's the way Winchester makes the rounds it seems the edges don't seem to lock into the bolt extractor well. Federal rounds and Winchester low brass rounds seem to eject better.

From what I read each shotgun is different and likes different rounds. I think I found what this shotty "hates".

I'll find out more when I fire this monster off tomorrow. Hitting the range with a little over 100 rounds. I can cycle through that in less than an hour. I'm gonna do the high brass last to see how many FTE I may get.

OK just got back from the range. Put down 110 rounds down the 50 yard range (no 25 yards avail to pattern today). Cycled EVERYTHING without issue. Seems Papa Midnight just needed a good old fashioned detailed cleaning and some oil. Even got some decent groups from the slugs at 50 yards including a head shot <go me :D >

Started with 10 rounds of Federal Rifled Slugs which were fine as expected.Cycled the High Brass last since I figured that's what the shotgun was having trouble with last outing. No issues with 25 rounds put through. The remaining 75 rounds was upland game # 8 shot with low recoil. I even did the mag dump and I was impressed. So were the father and son shooting next to me.

I initially had high hopes for this shotty and got disappointed its first outing. My hopes are a bit more renewed. I'm still gonna keep an eye on it and giving it another good cleaning tonight. Probably take it out in a couple of weeks.
