Are you looking into buying an assault weapon for protection after a devastating natural disaster (or the coming Zombie Apocalypse) plunges society into deadly anarchy? You’ve got it all wrong, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday: Get yourself a shotgun.

Biden, doing a Google+ “hangout” to promote President Barack Obama’s proposals for battling gun violence, had been asked whether a new assault weapons ban might infringe on the Second Amendment rights of those who want one “as a last line of defense” to fend off looters after “some terrible natural disaster.”

“Guess what? A shotgun will keep you a lot safer, a double-barreled shotgun, than the assault weapon in somebody’s hands [who] doesn’t know how to use it, even one who does know how to use it,” the outspoken vice president, a shotgun owner himself, replied. “It’s harder to use an assault weapon to hit something than it is a shotgun. You want to keep people away in an earthquake? Buy some shotgun shells.”

With the fate of Obama’s gun violence proposals unclear in the face of stiff opposition from most Republicans and some Democrats, Biden urged supporters of ideas like imposing a new assault weapons ban, limiting ammunition clips to 10 rounds and toughening background checks to pressure their elected representatives. “This town listens when people rise up and speak,” Biden said.

Like Obama before him, the vice president emphasized that he's a firm believer in the Second Amendment—but compared proposed new curbs on assault weapons to keeping fully-equipped F-15 fighter jets off the market.

“You have an individual right to own a weapon both for recreation, for hunting and also for your self-protection,” he said. "But just as you don’t have an individual right to go out and buy an F-15—if you’re a billionaire—with ordnance on it, just like you don’t have the right to buy an M-1 tank, just like you don’t have a right to buy an automatic weapon" you should not be able to get other weapons for which there is "no reasonable societal justification, or constitutional justification."

Biden noted that "it's not about keeping bad guns out of the hands of good people, it's about keeping all guns out of the hands of bad people. There should be rational limits."

One of Biden's questioners asked why, if they're rational, there's the lack of political will to enact them.

Biden paused, then said he would have to watch his words. “Both left and right sometimes take absolutist positions," he said.

The vice president emphasized that the administration was not calling for armed guards in schools, a proposal recently floated by the National Rifle Association. Instead, schools would have the flexibility to hire a uniformed guard, armed or not, if they so desired.

But Biden warned it would be a "terrible mistake" to arm school staff. "The last thing we need to do is be arming schoolteachers and administrators" who may not have firearm training, he said.

I'm really begining to loathe folks who voted for these people.
I wasnt planning on buying an F15, but apparently its ok to sell these weapons to countries that don't really like us.
Apparently "this town" doesn't listen, millions of firearms owners rose up and told him and his administration to cram their AWB. I guess the O administration only listens when it pushes their garbage.

OH THATS RIGHT!!! I forgot that you don't have to aim a shotgun! Just pull the trigger!!

Oh boy, we are in trouble if he really represents the people that so many mistakenly elected to lead our country...

And a double barrel at that. Ok, that will scare off the hordes of zoombis or zombie-like creatures after a natural or man-made disaster? No, sir, I'll keep ALL my various types of weapons.

Now where did I leave that F-15 parked??...

Pssh... who flies an F15? I use un-manned drones to do my bidding! All the COD Nazis love it!

They are a blast, especially when buzzing the neighborhood...

I HATE this kind of talk!!! Its actually dangerous to tell people a shotgun is easier to use than an AR whether in skilled hands or not! This isn't the first time I've heard this arguement from the antis. It must have been added to their talking points.

Seriously, its dangerous and irresponsible to tell people an AR is difficult to handle, even for someone who knows what they're doing, so get. A shotgun cause its more powerful and recoils less so its easier to control. They say its harder to hit something with an AR or "assault weapon" because it sprays bullets everywhere and can can kill 10, 20, even 30 people at a time.

My daughter can handle and shoot a 12 ga. But its far easier for her to pick up a semiauto carbine rifle and get on target and stay on target with far less recovery between shots. If its between those two, which one do I want my daughter to have available should she ever need to defend herself?

Basically it IS about disarming america. If we take the guns away from everyone, "bad people" can't get guns. Because all these laws have worked so far to prevent "bad people" from getting guns.

This reiderates my point above.

Didn’t one of his buddies shoot his hunting partner in the face with a shotgun….didn’t do shit …..Another failed government experiment

That was VP Dick Cheney.

At least he was out in the field bird hunting.

More than I can say for many other politicians.

Fixed it for him.

Every time Biden comes out and says somethign stupid, I immediately look to see what else is going on. He makes a good diversion to draw focus from other things and I think they use him for just that on occasion.

They are confusing the facts between a semi-auto and a full-auto (selective fire). It makes it more dramatic. Yes, in the hands of an unskilled shooter, a full-auto can "spray" bullets. But they also don't explain how a gun that "sprays" bullets can kill up to 30 people at a time. That is a 1-1 kill ratio with a 30 round magazine, an amazing feat. Most of those sprayed bullets are going to end up somewhere other than the intended target. Personally, I'd rather have a 3-round burst than a full-auto.

I got to shoot a full-auto MP5 a while back. it's harder than most people might think to keep it on target and it unloads a magazine a lot faster than you think if your only experiece is action movies.

You can definitely lay out a lot of lead in a short time in FA but there is a tradeoff.

Hey, if perps think that a double-barrel shotgun with field loads is WAY more effective than a semi-auto rifle then I'm all for the idea.
