Just your average gorilla

I've been away from guns for a while but just recently used the current "panic" to persuade my wife it would be a good idea to get one. Like most here my age I grew up hunting and shooting. I'm not an internet-certified Operator™ but I do know which end the bullets come out.

Just bought the second 500 I've ever owned. It's almost an antique, built in '88 according to Mossberg customer service. Wood furniture and a monstrous 28" barrel. If any quail break into my house, I'm ready. I'm not into birds or clays so I'll probably have the stock barrel cut down and fitted for a choke to make it a decent turkey gun. I'm planning to buy a 20" barrel and the matching extended tube for pest control. I may also eventually invest in a rifled barrel for deer. That's my favorite thing about shotguns, they can do it all.

Welcome to the forum.

I've threaded a couple 18 and 20 inch barrels for chokes. They shoot as well as the 12 foot long barrels but a lot easier to carry in the woods.

I'd like to thank everybody for the warm welcome. I probably won't be terribly active here for a while. I don't have any useful knowledge to contribute or many questions to ask. But once I find a place to shoot and get some reloading gear I do have some experiments I'd like to try.

My brother is the gun guy of the family. I grew up hunting, shooting, and reloading. I like guns. They just aren't my "thing". My 500 is the only gun I own and the only one I intend to own. I do want to improve and Guccify it but there are other things that I'm passionate about that take priority. There are also things like tires for the wife's car and the clutch in my pickup that have to be dealt with before I get to play with the 500.

I also don't care about sports, politics, celebrities, fashion, or most other "off topic" topics, so I don't plan to be active on that board.

On top of that, I'm really an asocial person. I'm content to sit at the house and do whatever. I just don't need to interact with people to be happy. I don't mind people, but I can live without. So I don't jump on forums to check in and see what's going on.

Howdy southern gorilla, welcome to the club.
Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself.
Please, feel free to chime in on any conversation, anywhere...
I think you may find there is one topic you may like that is off topic, (hopefully)

If not, no worries. Check in when you feel the need then.
Cheers!

Welcome back glad your back in the game.
While you was gone we killed lots of turkeys with 28" barrels none complained
Hah! Having done a bit more research I may not have the factory barrel cut down. But it does need to be reamed for chokes before I'd go hunting with it. The factory Improved Cylinder isn't exactly ideal.

Stealthy and patient... two things I am not. Of course, it'd probably cost as much to modify the factory barrel as it would to just buy a new barrel already properly set up.
