Letters after the model number

This may seem like a stupid question, but can someone tell me what the letters after the model number mean? I have seen 500a and such. Mine is a 500c. Just curious as to what the c means. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure of the difference between a 500 and a 500a, but I'm pretty sure that the c model indicates that it is 20ga. I would guess that the b model is 16ga.

A = 12 gauge
B = 16 gauge
C = 20 gauge
D= 28 gauge
E = .410 caliber
