Welcome to MO!
I don't personally like a pistol grip. I understand how the compact nature makes it easier to store, but there are other options that make more sense in my opinion. Additionally, a pistol grip only requires a whole new skill set to become proficient. Not that it can't be done, but its far from natural.
I really prefer, and recommend highly, the Hogue 12" short length of pull stock for just about anyone. Firstly, the shorter stock will help smaller framed shooters achieve a proper cheek weld and secondly will also help improve stance, getting behind the gun to reduce felt or perceived recoil.
The Hogue has an excellent recoil pad also.
A traditional stocked shotgun can be fired similarly to firing from the hip with a pistol grip by tucking the stock under the arm, even tucked into your armpit, to help make it more manuverable where the length of the gun is a concern.
For your concern about sights, id recommend, again highly here, the Meprolight tritium bead sight with a 5/40 thread pitch. It does require a small rubber O ring or something and maybe a drop of blue loctite. The O ring is needed because the sight will bottom out on the barrel out of line with the bore axis and you'll be lookin at it broadsided.
I recommend the Meprolight especially given you mentioned its primary function as an HD firearm. It will allow you to recognize your front bead even in total darkness if neccessary. Tritium is a radioactive isotope and glows in the dark, its pretty sweet! But they do have a shelf life so if at all possible try and identify the date manufactured at the time of purchase to get as much out of it as possible. At about $35 dollars its a good investment and should last from 7 to 12 years.
Id do as OldMossy suggested andbrowse the various picture threads. That's why we love pics so much, not solely to show off our firearms but also to look through for ideas.
