Pope releases AGW rant

CNN has the story on this.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-francis-climate-technology-encyclical/index.html

I have not read the 192 page encyclical itself, and don't intend to. From what is being reported I'll just say that I strenuously disagree with his reported assessment of humanity, technology, and the state of the planet, and especially with his proposed "solutions". It's obvious to me that he wants to drag down everyone to the same level of misery. He is obviously a hard core socialist, if not flat out communist, based on the few quotes in the CNN story.

That said, this is not a religious screed. It is purely political. The danger is that he is a very influential person on the political stage. This rant could easily be used to influence national laws, and international treaties.

I'm sure there will be more to come on this.

^^ No. If he was a jerk, everyone could just ignore him. He's a True Believer, with a lot of international political power. That's a lot more dangerous.

This is starting to get some traction in the media.

Some excerpts. I bolded some of the more disturbing comments below. It's apparent he would like to set the clock back 200 years. Think about that and the conditions the vast majority of humanity lived in then. It was not pretty. Life was short and brutal for all but the very powerful.

Whenever anyone sets out to "Save the World", you can bet your life that he (or she, or it) is not talking about saving your world. They're talking about saving their world.

ON THE SCOPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION:

"The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth."

"These situations have caused sister earth, along with all the abandoned of our world, to cry out, pleading that we take another course. Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last 200 years."
___

ON EVIDENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING:

"A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system. In recent decades this warming has been accompanied by a constant rise in the sea level and, it would appear, by an increase of extreme weather events, even if a scientifically determinable cause cannot be assigned to each particular phenomenon. Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it."

___

ON THOSE WHO DENY ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION:

"As often occurs in periods of deep crisis which require bold decisions, we are tempted to think that what is happening is not entirely clear. Superficially, apart from a few obvious signs of pollution and deterioration, things do not look that serious, and the planet could continue as it is for some time. Such evasiveness serves as a license to carrying on with our present lifestyles and models of production and consumption. This is the way human beings contrive to feed their self-destructive vices: trying not to see them, trying not to acknowledge them, delaying the important decisions and pretending that nothing will happen."

___

ON BUSINESS AND THE ENVIRONMENT:

"We need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals. Is it realistic to hope that those who are obsessed with maximizing profits will stop to reflect on the environmental damage which they will leave behind for future generations? Where profits alone count, there can be no thinking about the rhythms of nature, its phases of decay and regeneration, or the complexity of ecosystems which may be gravely upset by human intervention."

"To ensure economic freedom from which all can effectively benefit, restraints occasionally have to be imposed on those possessing greater resources and financial power. To claim economic freedom while real conditions bar many people from actual access to it, and while possibilities for employment continue to shrink, is to practice a doublespeak which brings politics into disrepute."

___

ON TREATMENT OF PEOPLE AND NATURE:

"A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted."

___

ON CREATION AS A REFLECTION OF GOD'S LOVE:

"Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous. The entire material universe speaks of God's love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God."

___

ON RELUCTANCE OF WEALTHIER NATIONS TO CHANGE:

"Many of those who possess more resources and economic or political power seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms, simply making efforts to reduce some of the negative impacts of climate change. However, many of these symptoms indicate that such effects will continue to worsen if we continue with current models of production and consumption."

I like this Pope. Has done a lot for the Catholic Church and is cleaning up all the messes left to him by his predecessors. But I believe he needs to keep his nose out of the world politics. Global warming and climate change demands are being driven by the world's wealthiest (who have the most to gain). Unless, of course, the Vatican is getting an infusion of $$$$$$$ from those same wealthy individuals...

More from Pope Liberal the 1st.

"People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday.

People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday.
Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry at a rally of thousands of young people at the end of the first day of his trip to the Italian city of Turin.
"If you trust only men you have lost," he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.
"It makes me think of ... people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn't it?" he said to applause.
He also criticised those who invest in weapons industries, saying "duplicity is the currency of today ... they say one thing and do another."
Francis also built on comments he has made in the past about events during the first and second world wars.
He spoke of the "tragedy of the Shoah," using the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.
"The great powers had the pictures of the railway lines that brought the trains to the concentration camps like Auschwitz to kill Jews, Christians, homosexuals, everybody. Why didn't they bomb (the railway lines)?"
Discussing World War One, he spoke of "the great tragedy of Armenia" but did not use the word "genocide".
Francis sparked a diplomatic row in April calling the massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians 100 years ago "the first genocide of the 20th century," prompting Turkey to recall its ambassador to the Vatican.

And yet he is behind bullet proof glass when he makes a public appearance, and the Vatican has their own army.

Yes, I am serious. It is their own army.

^^ Dementia. Gotta be dementia. Moses, David, Jesus, and many others including previous Popes never had a problem with weapons (including various chemical & bio ), or weapon makers.

What he really means is that he doesn't like weapons in the hands of ordinary citizens that aren't under his strict control. Just like any other lefty politician or tyrant.

Guess the Pope never read the bible then.

Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. Luke 22:36

The "he" is Jesus talking. Oops.

Psalm 144:1
Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight

Psalms 18-34
He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Ya, but the Pope can't let those pesky Bible verses get in the way of his agenda. Why is he still the Pope?

Seems like this Pope treats his Bible like Democrats treat the Constitution. It's a "living" document at best, and a moldy old piece of paper at worst, subject to selective interpretation. And I'm not religious. :)

Why is he still the Pope?

It's called Papal Infallibility.

The commonly held belief is that as the voice of Christ on earth, the Pope is answerable to none other than Christ and cannot be removed from office. From Jesus to the apostles and the bishops of his church, "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16), and "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matt. 18:18). There are countless other references in scripture.

As you can imagine the subject is one of endless debate, even among theologians...

I'm not Catholic so I wasn't sure. Seems to me that if they go against the teachings of Jesus, they should be removed.

That's one of the main points of contention with the concept of Papal Infallibility.

A particular pontiff can, as in this instance, develop ideas and philosophy apart from the teachings of Christ which are not accepted as the word of God. Since the Pope is still a man, his own private opinions and ideas can be considered fallible if not represented as the teachings of Christ. There in lies the rub. Many followers do not have the ability or presence of mind to attempt to distinguish between a Pope's individual idealistic philosophy and the true teachings of Christ.

Still, a Pope cannot be removed from office regardless of divergent philosophies or even scandal. Looking back through history when cases have arisen where a Pope has strayed too far from the official position of the Church, there have been occurrence of "sudden and unforseen" illness and death warranting a new Pope be appointed. The successor is typically one who's personal ideas and philosophy are more in line with Church tradition...

Guess who the main stockholder for Beretta Arms is? You guessed it, the Vatican.

Oh, the hypocrisy
