Proud Gun Owner and Democrat?!?!?!

Towmaster21

.270 WIN
While attending a social BBQ this last Saturday one of my co-workers showed me his newly purchased AR-15. I had made the comment that he might want to buy a few extra magazines and possibly a parts kit seeing as how some of the usual gun grabbing Democrats were on the warpath again. He got this miffed look on his face and stated...."Well I'm a gun owner and a Democrat"
Which brings me to my question for the readers of this post. It seems a good percentage of gun control laws, bans and restrictions are founded, sponsored and co-sponsored by the Democratic party. With that being said, how can and does a gun owner who I'm assuming believes in the 2nd Amendment, proudly proclaim that they are a member a political group that attempts to gut that right at almost every turn?
You don't even want to know how the conversation about the current POTUS went lol

I believe there are a number of freedom loving and Constitutional dems. I also believe Obama is not a dem but rather very left leaning, a hard left liberal and at least socialist leaning.

My grandmother grew up in very rural Indiana on a tobacco farm, her family were always dems. But these were like JFK democrats at worst and I think would be most like social conservatives today.

But to be completely satisfied with the current administration and be partisan, just doesn't add up. As you point to, these two ideas are almost contradictory.

Now if your coworker is a partisan democrat, lock-step type, I would be confused too.

Yeah my CCW instructor is a Dem, I asked him why and he replied, " Because my family are Dems." he doesn't follow the issues, just a sheep. I piggy back Rossignol quotes. +1

Here's a link to the online board, the liberal gun club. Talk about the black sheep of the family. Once every 6-12 months I'll lurk and check out some of the posts. It can be interesting and a little entertaining.

I avoid talking guns with my brother who isn't an avid anti but doesn't see the need. I have been working on him for 4 years to not vote for BHO again but he's still on the fence. I'd rather my vote cancel out someone in Philly than my own blood.

I considered it, but I dont really have that much energy these days...

Just like religion and Chinese Buffets, some people like to pick and choose the parts they like.

Oh he is very much twitterpated with BHO, the giver of healthcare to all...and loves his M1 with its 30 round magazine. So needless to say it is confusing to me how one goes with the other.

Democrates are not anti-gun as a whole. They just want to strictly control who has them, what type they can have, what they can be used for and how they can be carried. Does your friend feel that some restrictions are just good "common sense"?

Democrats arent stupid, they have learned that by imposing restrictions slowly and carefully (i.e. when the puplic is hyped up over a shooting) that they can slowly and surely get what they want. Every time we give in to one of those "common sense" gun laws we are giving up another chunk of our freedom. That is exactly how it happened in England!! They work on us and make us think it's just one little restriction, it won't really affect anyone and it will "save lives" or keep "children safe". People that don't know the facts belive it because it pulls them in on an emotional level. The problem is that when people have an emotion based belief it's hard to convince them ortherwise, even with overwhelming facts. The dems know this, just look at the MSM.

I'll just be honest, most of the recent gun restrictions HAVE came from the Replublican Party.

Back in 1986, the machine gun ban, signed into law by Ronald Reagan

President Bush II signed an executive order prohibiting certain firearm parts (barrels and receivers) from being imported in parts kits that are commonly used for US companies to rebuild into functioning firearms

So it's not just the Democrat Party. Neither party has what I would consider an acceptable position or stellar reputation on the subject.

But Democrats seem a lot more hellbent on the subject

Point taken. There are many on both sides. The Dems just seem more vocal about it.

I believe Reagan also signed many of the very restrictive laws in CA during his stint there as well. Legislatively, he was not the friend of gun owners that many seem to think he was.

I would describe myself as liberal, mainly on social issues, and normally I would identify myself as a democrat. However, in the coming election, I most likely will not be voting Democrat.

I did ask him what he thought "reasonable" restrictions were and the answer I got was more confusing than it was an answer. These things shouldn't be in the hands of gang bangers, the mentally ill and such...ok I can agree with that but I countered that adding more laws on top of ones that were not being enforced to their full potential was nothing short of building a brand new house over the rotting remains of an old house. Sure its going to be fine for a couple years but eventually the whole damn thing is going to fail. Basically the impression I got after leaving the conversation was "Its ok for me, but not for "other" people that I think shouldn't have them"
Make of that what you will but when you get a political party that is extremely vocal about restricting or banning something you are responsible with, enjoy and feel should be protected...how do you support them come election time?

I was wondering the same thing.

I could not with a clear consciounce vote for anyone who is willing to restrict or entirely infringe my Constitutional rights.

And this goes for both parties.

And Obama is way up on that list.

Not only is he calling for more firearm restrictions, just look at my sig line too. More than 1000 people have been laid off in my little community in the last 4 years who are/were in coal mining related occupations.

1000 may seem small to some of these bigger places, but those are huge hits for a small local economy to take in such a short period of time. It is coming to the point right now that our community is struggling to survive as we know it.

And the majority of these problems have stemmed directly from Democrat leadership and failed policies.

I think it's entirely possible to run across liberal/democrat gun owners. However, I bet you'd have a tough time finding one who owns several AR rifles (and/or AKs, etc.) with high capacity mags to publicly own up to it. I don't know many conservative/republicans who would hesitate to "admit" it. Take care. Tom Worthington.

While slightly off subject, I try to live my life being me, not what society thinks or believes I should be, look like or act. And if I am a gun owner and under attack from media disinformation, and liberal know nothing politicians, then hell yes I'm going to stand and make myself heard instead of hiding in the shadows and hoping for the best.
