does anyone have recommendations for any kind of scope to use on my 835?
i was looking at red dot sights.
pros vs cons of using them.
are they worth it?
I think one thing to keep in mind regarding red dots, you get what you pay for. There are some less expensive ones available, but its gonna take a decent one to stand up to the recoil. Burris makes nice red dots. I have a Bushnell red dot on mine but havent put enough rounds through it to say it will stand the test of time, though they boast it will. There are also some very high end red dots.
Depending on how youre using it, like for hunting, maybe a 2x power for rifled slugs would be worth doing. If for turkey, you may not need something like that. I like the red dot without magnification because it allows me to shoot with both eyes open.
i have ms so my eyes get blurry once in while. (oh my god ! a blind man hunting!)
any how like rossingnol said, i like to keep both eyes open, and then just before i pull the trigger i close one eye. to make sure im on target. however when i do that and open my eye the blur sets in for a few a seconds...then goes away. idk why, and neither does my dr.
i have shot my father in laws savage 99 and did the same thing, and im pretty consistent, but he recommended i get the shotgun. i wouldn't have to close my eyes to shoot. and i would miss less.
...
also the dots i was just looking at are as follows....
It sounds like youre really leanin towards that Burris Fast Fire style! The only thing I saw on one of those was an 11 MOA dot. Unless youre doing some real close shooting, I dont believe you will be real happy with it. Ok, its a shotgun... but that doesnt mean all your shooting will be at 10 yards.
A 3 MOA is a real decent dot for slug shooting, and I kinda disagree with the philosophy you need a bigger dot at closer ranges. The FastFire it sounds like is going to meet your needs and wants and keep you on budget.
Some will even say you dont need some sort of optic on a shotgun at all, but similar to what you mentioned, I also have eye issues and being able to shoot with both eyes open is rather beneficial.
i think thats the kind i'll be getting. i have talked with my local gun shop and they know personally about it. and they actually recommended that one. he loves it. and said he's shot a bunch with it and it's still on target.
Have you decided on a mount yet? Alot of folks make them, like Mesa, EGW, and even Mossberg. The Mossberg rails are shorter and more closely match the length of the receiver.
The EGW for sure and Mesa I think are somewhat cantilevered beyond the receiver, though not extremely so.
i like the saddle because you can still see the factory optics. ebay is the cheapest i could find (google) that has camo on it. i'd rather have camo on it but i just as well get camo tape and use that .....
