Walmart Experience

Hey everyone,

I went to my local Walmart and asked about the Mossberg 500 in the case for $259, and if they have any in stock. He said no, that he would have to sell me the one in the case. I asked when they would get more in, and he said not until they sell that one. Does Walmart only carry one of each gun or something? Just curious if this is an isolated thing. Call me crazy, but I want my first gun purchase (my other one was a gift, and is pretty old), to come in the nice and neat box, and also where the gun hasn't been handled and on display for months. Not sure where to get one now.

That sounds like a made up line to me about not getting more in until they sell the last one. Around here they don't stay on display for long before they are gone. I recently purchased an AR15 at Walmart and they put it back into the original box along with every bit of literature and the lock it comes with. They wouldn't want you carrying a shotgun through the store that wasn't boxed up. In fact they will carry the gun and escort you to the front door before handing it back to you outside.

For that price I wouldn't let it bother you that it was on display. Most guns are handled in some way or another.

Keep us posted on what you end up doing and don't forget to post up pics when you become a new owner.

There are other places to buy guns besides Walmart, ya know. In fact, I've never bought any firearms from Wallyworld, and probably never will. I go to a gunshop for guns and ammo, a hardware store for hardware and tools, a furniture store for furniture, and so on.

We have some old type hardware stores in these parts that still have gun counters. They are usually more hunting oriented but some have HD shotguns and one carries AR's, Glock's. Eotech's etc.

For what it's worth I work for a nation wide 1000+ store retail chain and our products run through an auto-replenishment system. Each one of our locations are set up on a replenishment model for every item we sell and our distribution center only ships a store new inventory once or twice a week and only when they sell what they have. High volume stores get more units according to their sales history, but if a store is only set up to carry one unit at a time that's all they get. Low margin, high cost goods are shipped in minimal quantities as a loss prevention measure. WalMart is set up on a similar system, only their inventory information is real-time which enables them to replenish stores faster. Long story short, this type of replenishment is pretty much industry standard for large chains...

Thanks for the filling the blanks in Les. It never ceases to amaze me what I may learn on here in a given day.

I know what you mean Mike.

I learn something new here everyday. Glad I could shed some light on this particular situation...

Just in time delivery. Should be noted for home planning purposes that groceries are handled in much the same way ;) . Everything is barcoded. Which means the vast majority of people are at the mercy of our technology.

I have only purchased one firearm at Walmart. My 930 with breeching barrel. When I inquired about getting one new in the box, the very competent man handling the sale said I get the one in the display case. I had looked at it and there were no handling marks or nicks, so I was happy. He had sold plenty of guns and the transaction could not have gone smoother. I'd go back again if there was anything I wanted there.

Do I prefer one new in the box, oh yes. I have bought plenty of used guns too. I don't have to be the first.

Try Grabagun with free 2day shipping until 1-29-14

I could have walked out of Wally World without doing any paperwork on a 10-22 about 20 years ago

no doubt, in fact I would never buy a firearm or ammo from WalMart.....just a quirk I guess but I just wont do it, don't care how good the deal is.....if they some gun powder then I might buy some of that. To me wally is just a big 7/11...drop in for convenience or if everywhere else is closed. I always go to the little store across the street and probably pay a little more, the wife on the other hand.......

@ the original poster.......... Many large firearm retailers like Academy, Bass Pro, Gander Mtn, Cabellas, Big 5 etc.... all operate on the same concept as Walmart. In many cases yes they do have extra box stock that has been unmolested but eventually there will be a time they are simply down to the last one that is on display. He may very well be telling you the truth that their particular location doesn't keep much stock on hand if they are low volume as was suggested already in a previous post.

Doesn't mean they will give you a discount for being a floor sample but you can ask nicely. Can't hurt to try. Even as a floor sample it will be considered a NIB firearm and Mossberg will honor the warranty if anything went wrong with your new firearm. I'd take it and go enjoy shooting it. Unless you intend to immediately put it in a safe somewhere and forget it about it for 30 something years as an investment piece its going to show some wear from usage. A few handling marks gives it some character. I like buying used guns/guitars/etc...... from pawn shops. Otherwise the first ding caused by you hurts a bit more. YMMV as usual.

I bought one firearm at WalMart. It was my Mossberg 702 .22 rifle. He sold me the one out of the display case. He did repack in the original box with all the original documentation. It doesn't seem as though the local WalMarts have anything that isn't in the display case. Heck, even the display case isn't full, nowadays. Take care. Tom Worthington

Walmart used to have a catalog behind the counter that listed every make/model thay could oreder and you could get anything listed there...but you had to ask to see it, they did not advertise.

It's been several years since perusing this book so I'm not sure of they still have it or not. Even if they do, you still have to order it, it does not resolve the stock on hand issue.

I purchased my through Buds and had a great experience. Fast, good price and easy to order.

Bud's is an industry leader IMHO. I have bought from them in the past and anticipate that I will buy from them again in the future.

They are always in the 'mix' when I am looking. I like their CS and 100% free shipping with a decent FFL on your side will easily offset tax in a local purchase.

That said I buy local and net - new and used. With Each purchase I weigh the circumstances at hand.
