your go-to CLP. Help wanted

.270 WIN
Recently I did a review of cold bluing products and in that review I included corrosion resistance but used only BC Barricade. I stated that I intend to do a review of a variety of gun-centric rust inhibitors. Im amassing (my wife says hoarding) quite a stock pile of CLP products focusing on the “P” aspects. To that end I want to make sure I have a comprehensive list of products gun owners might use to stave off rust on their firearms so Im coming to you for suggestions of which products I should secure for this evaluation. Ive scrubbed the store shelves of Gander and Cabelas and Bass Pro and Farm and Fleet and Fleet Farm as well as online outlets for rust inhibitors that cant easily be found. Id like to do a side by side evaluation of about 15 or 20 products and want to know what everybody uses to keep your gun rust free. I figure that by the time I buy the most common 15 or so that would cover the lion’s share of what the average guy uses.

Im focusing on manufactured/commercial brands and wont be evaluating home brews or gunsmith “secret recipes”. So please list em up and tell me that no evaluation would be complete without including brand “X”. I plan to post this request in a few different areas on the forum to attract as many suggestions as possible because some guys are hunters an others are only target shooters or only waterfowl hunt but don’t deer hunt so if you see it multiple times you need only reply in one thread. Thanks for your help.

I've used BC Barricade for years, but recently switched to Frog Lube as an all in one CLP.

Focusing primarily on the "C & L" for my use, but it'd certainly be interesting to see its rust preventative properties evaluated in your test...

Thanks for the input guys but this wont be a TEST. It will be an evaluation.
Ive read up on ASTM B117 and ISO 9227 salt fog chamber. That’s a very rigorous testing procedure and those are tests. Mine will be an evaluation. Where I think they could use some improved rigor is a fluctuation in temp, a UV component and less cross contamination due to proximity. I don’t have such a chamber and intend to conduct the evaluation outdoors by applying a salt spray but also allow the sample plates see what our guns see in regards to temperature fluctuations and UV rays as well as normal dirt and other contaminants encountered out of doors. Mine wont be a test but rather an evaluation of a group of like purposed products. I want the best protection for my guns, bows, cars, tools, lake gear, etc.

Please do not post more than one. One topic should be sufficient.

On my centerfire SD pistols I use Frog Lube.
On my IPSC pistol, I use Mobile 1 Synthetic Bearing Grease and 90W gear lube.
On my AR, I use Mobile 1 Synthetic Bearing Grease.
The lube of choice for my rimfires is Hoppes #9 oil.
On my 930SPX I use Rand CLP (Provided to me by Mossberg).

I have seen others (Friends that learned in the sandbox) use a mixture of ATF and 30w motor oil.

Based on posts and PM’s here and on other sites where I made the same request, I begun to generate a list of the rust inhibitors that I will secure for this evaluation. The product list thus far is. In no particular order

Im sure the list will grow. Additional suggestions welcomed

Time to break out the credit card. Based on web searches, the shipping on some of this stuff is nearly as high as the product itself. This may end up costing a small fortune but I will have a lifetime supply of gun care products when Im finished.

I've had good luck with Weapon Shield. It's a CLP.

I've also got a quart of Lubriplate FMO 350 AW that I tracked down on a recommendation. I haven't tried it yet though. I had to ladle it out of a 5gal bucket from a friends restaurant.

Oh, and purely for fun sake (I'm just kidding here and don't take this seriously...) you could evaluate a very respected product known as cosmoline; which Liquid Alox comes fairly close to if you cannot actually get cosmo.

It's nice to see you've got Eezox on your list. I'm sold on that stuff.

I've run my own little experiment with Eezox. On the front gate of the family farm there is an old, large Master padlock. It's been there for God only knows how many years, exposed to the rain, blistering Texas sun, and freezing cold. Needless to say, every couple of months we would have to put oil or graphite in it to restore smooth operation.

One day I put a few drops of Eezox into each shackle hole and the key hole. It was over a year and a half before I had to do it again!

Thank You for sharing all evaluation results with the rest of us. I read your eval on gun bluing products. It was a real good read and very usefull. V/R Phipp13

Still waiting on the brown truck, FedX and the mailman to stop buy to deliver all the purchases but I think im about done buying gun care products for this evaluation. I’ll stop at 40 products. Here is the list. I’ll be at a gun show on Friday and unless there is a product there I don’t have on the list. I think I’ll get going on the evaluation.
