Compound Bow: Pics and Discussion

Man, I don't know how I missed that we have an entire Archery section! /facepalm Ya'll are making me miss my Bear Competition. I wish I never would of sold that thing. Diapers were more important at the time though. :(

Sadly, no. I got it when I was 12 or 13. It was a little big at the time, but I grew into it. Ended up selling it after 6 years of having it for WAY less than I should of ... but cash talks.

My first bow is a PSE PULSAR it's old but it goes good on pigs with 125gr broadheads on easton 340 shafts. My pictures keep coming up invalid, not sure why.

I have a Bowtech Pro 38 its a little older but shoots good. The Robin hood was at 30 yards Brother in law said it was impossible so had to prove him wrong expensive proof but woth it.

Thanks MikeD! What are your pins set at on your bow?

Depends on my purpose.

When I used to shoot 3d more actively I used a single pin that I could adjust from 20 to 65 yards.

For hunting I tend to keep it simple and use a single pin set at 25 yards. Sometime double pins set at 20 and 30. I find it I have to many set it makes it more likely I will use the wrong pin.

I was in the same boat about 4 years ago. I went to a family reunion and was staying with my uncle I shot his bow and the next day we were at the archery shop I bought the bow I have now it was used and got it for $100. The best part was the guy set it up for me and gave me a huge discount on everything since he knew my dad and uncle and they told him I just got back from Iraq. You wont regret it I love it as much as I did as a kid.

Never shot traditional before, but It'd love to take a crack at it...

I shoot a Mathews Monster. 70# @ 30 in. QAD drop away rest, Tru-Glo Micro-Brite 5-pin site, Hawglite for hunting chootin' hogs at nite, Easton Axis arrows, Grim Reaper 100 gr Razor Cut, and 100 gr 2 blade Blood runners. This setup is smokin fast! 330 fps with 420 gr Gold Tips and 310 with the Easton's @ 500 grains. That's over 100# of KE. A little overkill for these Texas deer, but just fine for the these old nasty boars. My trad bow is a pristine condition 40 yr old Ben Pearson Recurve 28"@45 lbs. I also make bows, too. I'm in the process of making a bamboo-backed, Osage longbow 70"@70#.

That's a nice setup. I had a mathews Conquest II for a few years. They make awesome bows

I have an old proline hurricane from high school. I'll get pix this weekend.

shame on me....I'll get to it soon. I promise.

I have a question. My daughter is 8 almost 9 yrs old and just recently quit gymnastics because she doesn't want to compete or train 12 hrs a week. While we were discussing other activities to try she latched on to archery. (and no she hasn't seen the movie hunger games) shes got great upper body strength because of the gymnastics so I think it would be a good fit for her. I have searched for a place to find lessons because I have no clue about it and I don't want to let her learn any bad habits that have to be fixed later. But I can't find any place that gives formal lessons. We live in Dallas TX area. Does anyone know where I can find a teacher? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know of anyone specifically in that area but a lot of kids get their start in JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development)

I didn't see a club listed specifically for Dallas but there are several in TX so there may be one within range for you.

The same basic principles of good form exist regardless of whether or not you shoot an olympic style recurve or a compound.

Other than that I would just try and find an archery range and see if there are any people giving lessons.

Note: There are some certification courses offered by the NFAA (National Field Archery Association) and some others. You can ask if the instructors are certified. It doesn't always guarantee much but it shows that they at least take enough interest in teaching it to learn how to train. But like many other things. You may have to find the right instructor as evertone teaches a little differently.

Good luck
