US Navy blockades Yemen!!

I wonder if the Iranians will try to run the blockade. I wouldn't. Will the Russians step in? They're good buddies with Iran.

A U.S. aircraft carrier has been dispatched to waters off Yemen to join other American ships prepared to block any Iranian shipments to the Houthi rebels fighting in Yemen.

The U.S. Navy has been beefing up its presence in the Gulf of Aden and the southern Arabian Sea amid reports that a convoy of about eight Iranian ships is heading toward Yemen and possibly carrying arms for the Houthis.

A Navy official confirmed to Fox News that the USS Theodore Roosevelt -- along with her escort ship, the USS Normandy, a guided-missile cruiser -- left the Persian Gulf on Sunday en route for the Arabian Sea, to help enforce the blockade.

Tensions are rising in the region even as the U.S. and five other world powers scramble to strike a final deal with Iran on its nuclear program by the end of June. The fighting in Yemen, where U.S. ally Saudi Arabia is leading a coalition against the Iran-backed rebels, is complicating matters.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, without commenting specifically on any Navy movements, said the U.S. has concerns about Iran's "continued support" for the Houthis.

Iran wouldn't last 30 sec. attacking the Roosevelt Strike Group. I kinda hope they do try something, just to shut them up. :D
You beat me to that one Gunny. They don't stand a chance.

I wonder if Barry is aware of this blockade. It's not his style.

Good point. A line in the water is even easier to ignore than a line in the sand.

On the other hand if the Strike Group commander is free to act...... Well, it's interesting to note what the USS Normandy (CG-60, Ticonderoga class cruiser) accompanying the Roosevelt is packing. Among other goodies is a 5"/62 gun with a range of 63 miles and a 16-20rds/min rate of fire that don't miss (GPS and Optical targeting on board each round).:eek: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/cg-47-specs.htm .

Yea baby...thank God for earth shattering real honest to goodness naval firepower...

Had the honor & privilege to be onboard the USS George H.W. Bush ( CVN-77 ) down in Naval Station Norfolk, VA in 2013.

when she was ready to deploy thee first U.S. Navy Drone to take off from a carrier and land at NAS Oceana, VA.

...and yea...look at the size of this "drone"...friggin' awesome !!

Took these pics off the bridge...as my wife and I were guests of Admiral King.

Also did a personal tour of the USS Jason Dunham ( DDG-109 )...an Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer. She is named after Corporal Jason Dunham, USMC, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic service in the Iraq War.

Check out the firepower on this "Tin Can"...

Mk-15 Phalanx Close-In Weapons System

MK-46 Lightweight Torpedo (LT) & MK-50 Torpedo Advanced Lightweight Torpedo (ALWT)

Mark 45 ~ 5-inch, 54-caliber lightweight gun

32 count Tomahawk ASM/LAM Missle array...

All I can say is "Bad Ass"...

I'd guess the 5"/54 has been upgraded to the 5"/62 by now. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/systems/mk-45.htm . Even more BA! :D

Yes sir...that upgrade was to be retro-fitted after they returned from sea trials with the drone....almost two years ago.

Pretty scary what the capabilities are these days. Back in the day when I was learning all about CEP (Circular Error Probability) of various delivery systems, it was a big deal and measured in 10's of yds or more. With the self guided munitions tech now, you can drive one of these bad boys up the cook's rectum from 60 miles away!!

Yes sir...naval precision can put a tomahawk right up that Iranian camel jockey's butt no problem !!

A list of US warships steaming into harms way...

USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) ...is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Call sign is Rough Rider

USS Normandy (CG-60)... is a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser

USS Forrest Sherman (DDG-98) ...is an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer

USS Winston (DDG-81) ...is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer

USS Sentry (MCM-3) ...is an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship

USS Dextrous (MCM-13) ...is an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship

Plus three amphibious ships carrying about 2,200 Marines:

USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) ...is a Wasp -class amphibious assault ship

USS New York (LPD-21) ...is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock

USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43) ...is a Whidbey Island class dock landing ship

USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE-10) ...is a Lewis and Clark class dry cargo ship

USNS Laramie (T-AO-203) ...is a Henry J. Kaiser class underway replenishment oiler

USNS Arctic (T-AOE-8) ...is a Supply class fast combat support ship

Let's keep all these brave men and women in our prayers...

as they prepare to interdict Iranian Navy vessels and cargo ships

in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen !!

^^ You can add to the above list at least 1, possibly 2 or 3 attack subs, and probably one boomer farther out in the Arabian Sea. I think Britain, France, Italy, and a few others also have some warships in the immediate area.

Yes sir...didn't want to give away all their secrets !!

I'm of the opinion that the general public has no clue just how strategically important Yemen is to the rest of the world. Folks think of Yemen as just another sandbox. Far from it. Yemen, and control of the southern entry to the Red Sea, is at least as important as the Panama Canal. And make no mistake, Iran would control Yemen.

The Suez has been shut down at least twice in recent history, not by Yemen but in '67 & 73 during the Israeli wars. Yemen itself likely does not have the capability to close it off, but Iran could if they gain control of Yemen (mines, which they have a significant capability to deploy). Iran can & does produce non-magnetic, free-floating, and remote-controlled mines. They may have taken delivery of pressure, acoustic, and magnetic mines from Russia. Also, Iran was negotiating with China for rocket-propelled rising mines. The southern entry to the Red Sea is only about 10 miles across between Yemen and Djibouti, easy artillery range, and sinking a few ships in it would shut it down for long time. Even the threat would cause commercial shipping to go the long way around Africa, or pay whatever Iran wanted to charge for passage.

It's also not just oil tankers, it's about 10% of all global shipping of practically everything. Europe moves a lot of cargo thru there as does India, Africa, Australia/New Zealand, the Far East, and even the N. and S. American west coasts. Probably well above a trillion dollars worth of trade per year. Nobody is going to allow Iran to hold them hostage with that kind of money at stake.

Absolutely Gunny...Iran is betting Obama blinks, but with so much at stake, he better not...we shall see in the next few hours.

The Red Sea has a lengthy and very interesting history, going back to at least 2500 BC as a trade route. Moses even got involved. As did the Roman Empire, the Persians, Napoleon, and many others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sea#Extent . Even the Suez Canal goes back around 3000 years, in it's early form, as a canal between the Nile and the Red Sea. People should know stuff like this. It lends some perspective on current events. :)

I didn't know that, but I'm glad I do now.

I knew there were a lot of trade routes around Europe and Asia and Africa, but I don't recall ever knowing exactly where.
