I didn't know that, but I'm glad I do now.
I knew there were a lot of trade routes around Europe and Asia and Africa, but I don't recall ever knowing exactly where.
It's part of the Silk Road from ancient times, that runs from S. China thru Afganistan to Europe, India and includes Africa and the Red Sea. Geography has always played a big part in global trade and therefore politics, cultures, etc. Same routes are used today, only many more tributaries.
