Is this worth restoring?

This Springfield 67D was given to me and is in pretty bad condition. It is rusty with a broken stock but cycles easily and the barrel appears to be alright. Is it worth restoring? Can I do any or most of it myself? (with guidance of coarse) I don't know what year it is but I really like the design and looks of it and with zero cash into it I could throw a few bucks at it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Hope all of the pics aren't a problem. I just want you to get a good look at it. Thanks

looks like a nice project gun. were you looking to just restore it to its original config,,,,or something like a HD?

I'm leaning towards original right now but I wouldn't be apposed to other options. Are there many options for these?

that i dont know. i guess it depends on what you are looking to do with it and how much you can do yourself. i dont believe its a big $$$ shotgun from what ive read. but like i said ,,,could be a fun project gun.

Original it is then. I like the looks too much to change it and to honor it's former owner, it will stay that way. I am willing to do as much as I can myself unless it requires expensive special tools, knowledge etc. I will probably get a gun smith involved at some point to make sure it is all together and functioning. I have many tools and am not afraid to use them but have little experience with this type of project.

go for it. there is a lot of people and knowledge on this site to help you.
most of all ,have fun doing it.
and make sure you keep the pics coming.

I'd have the firearm inspected by a qualified gunsmith before you put too much work into it.

If it's just surface rust it shouldn't be a problem, but it the receiver is rusted deep enough to have compromised its structural integrity it would be a lost cause. Better safe than sorry...

With that much rust, you may as well break out a brass wire brush on a drill to get the majority of it knocked off of the receiver before you reblue it. If it isn't too bad once you get into it.

I don't know where you could find a replacement stock, but I personally would love to have that gun to try to restore.

found this for ya.

thanks guys! the majority of the rust is on the surface. the gun was wrapped in a towel and in a canvas case. when I took the towel off it was stuck to the frame so it obviously got pretty wet at one time. hopefully the inside isn't too bad. I will tear into it after the holidays. probably soak it in a penetrating oil for a few days before I attempt to break anything loose. thanks again mossy!

Finally got around to disassembling tonight. pretty straight forward. this is my first time tearing down a shotgun and surprisingly everything came apart easily. for the most part all of the internals only need a good cleaning. no internal rust to speak of.

I do need help with three things though:

I can't figure out how to get the forend apart. the end collar only turns a little bit but doesn't come off. Any ideas?

The cartridge stop has a pivot screw with a notched round nut (see pic) on the inside. I briefly tried to hold the nut with a screwdriver while turning the screw but they both spin. I'm assuming this comes apart???

Lastly I see the barrel has two notches on the receiver end (see pic) . what special tool is needed to remove the barrel?

A product I use to remove rust is Big 45 frontier metal cleaner. It dont look like much, but it works. Plus its inexpensive. http://frontiermetalcleaner.com/

A place I get my replacement stocks at is called Gun Stocks inc. They are 90% [or close] finished stocks, that just need fitting, sanding and finisahing. When I fit them I fit with the butplate installed to get a perfict size/fit. At the receiver I install the stock and mark it with a black marker and remove the excess wood s l o w l e y to make sure I get a perfect fit. http://gunstocksinc.com/ You may need to contact them to see if they have a stock for your shotgun as they dont have everything listed . Or at least they did not the last time I talked with them.

Hope this helps.

thanks JB! I read that big 45 is not recommended for use on cold blued steel. how do I know if my gun is cold or hot blued?

thanks mossy! but did you watch that video? it was kind of painful to watch :) and I didn't really gain anything. but I do appreciate the effort.

Hot blue is used in a factory. Cold blue is usually used by the general public on touch ups. If I was a betting man I would put $100 on it being hot blued.

JB, that's what my research tells me as well. I will order the big 45 and see how clean it comes. after that do I just leave it as is and keep it oiled? or do I have it re blued? paint is definitely out of the question but I'm sure blueing is too costly.

I called gunstocksinc and they can not help. also called numric gun parts and no luck. anyone know of other options for stocks and forends?
