I use it for yardwork and cleaning side branches off firewood. With a 3 inch blade on an hatchet you have to pay more attention to hit square on the target. With a 10 inch blade you can work faster. Also, if I would ever take it on an extended wilderness trip, I`d rather carry 10 inches of edge than 3 1/4.
For cutting trees, the rounded face of a hatchet cuts better. I bought a boy`s axe and really like it for the small stuff I do. I coppice eucalyptus for firewood when it gets about 4 to 5 inches in diameter, so my felling axe would is a little bit of overkill.
